Treating Wrinkles with Dermal Fillers

By DLM Admin on December 20, 2019 in Injectables, Radiesse

Wrinkles inevitably happen for many reasons. Generally, they are caused by a lack of volume under the skin as time goes on and collagen begins to become scarce. Other times, they can be the result of sun damage or smoking. Although it might seem like a facelift is the only option, there are many different non-surgical methods available in the cosmetic market today. One popular option is dermal fillers, an injectable way to fill in wrinkles. Here’s what to know about this quick and easy treatment option.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that restore volume in a number of different ways. They have a lot of benefits, including that they don’t require downtime or recovery. They are quick, effective, and can last for months to years. They are also highly versatile and can be used on many different areas of the face. Some of the most common dermal filler brands are Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse and Bellafill.

What types of dermal fillers do we offer?

Dermal fillers come in different types to provide different treatment methods. These include:

  • Calcium hydroxyapatite: (e.g.) Radiesse – This is a bone constituent that both provides volume and jumpstarts the body’s ability to produce collagen as the product fades over time. This means it can produce long-term treatment for wrinkles.
  • Hyaluronic acid: (e.g.) Juvederm, Restylane – Hyaluronic acid is found in the skin and is responsible for retaining moisture and suppleness. Its derived forms can be injected under the skin to provide volume before the product fades over time and is safely absorbed by the body.
  • Polymethylmethacrylate: (e.g.) Bellafill – This type of injectable promotes collagen production over time and is often paired with purified bovine collagen to provide additional support. Often touted as a “permanent” filler, we choose not to offer Bellafill because complications and unfavorable outcomes are permanent as well.

Choosing the right type of injectable usually means discussing your medical history and preferences with Dr. Partington, who can recommend the right option for you.

What should I know about dermal filler treatment?

It’s most important to select a reputable and experienced injector. This ensures that your treatment will be successful and safe. You should always avoid cheap prices and practices who cannot produce before-and-after pictures or credentials. This increases the chances that your product will be ‘watered down’ or counterfeit.

Most patients tolerate the injection process well, but we can supply a topical numbing cream for additional comfort. Some dermal fillers contain lidocaine, a common anesthetic used by ophthalmologists and dentists. If you have an allergy to lidocaine or a history of reaction to it, you should be sure to let Dr. Partington know during a consultation so he can recommend the right option for you.

After treatment, you can expect some mild swelling and redness at the injection site, but this usually subsides quickly. Although it can vary, many dermal fillers last for up to one year or more, after which you can opt for re-treatment.
