Vaginal rejuvenation vs. Labiaplasty

Today women are increasingly looking for different options for vaginal rejuvenation. Not just due to aging, women suffer from a loose or slacking vagina due to childbirth and hormone changes. Sadly, not all women find it easy to discuss the problem with their gynecologist and not all doctors talk about it with their patients. However, there are several surgical and non-surgical procedures available to tighten the vagina and enhance its appearance.
Firstly, it is important to understand that vaginal rejuvenation can be both a cosmetic as well as a reconstructive option. While a cosmetic procedure is chosen purely for aesthetic purposes; a reconstructive procedure will enhance the functionality of the vagina. Vaginal tightening can be achieved with non-surgical treatments as well as surgical options. In case you wish to change the size of the vaginal lips, you will mostly have to opt for a surgical procedure.
What is non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation?
There are several changes that impact the quality of life of a woman and these include vaginal laxity, loss of vaginal lubrication, stress urinary incontinence, loss in tone of the labia majora, and decreased erotic sensation. As the media is beginning to acknowledge these problems and talk about it, there is an increase in the number of treatment options available to women.
There are devices like the Geneveve and ThermiVa which use either laser energy or radiofrequency to promote collagen tightening in the area. Radio frequency treatments with surface cooling protect the vaginal skin but offer an improvement in vaginal tightening and sexual function. Laser energy is an alternative which heats tissue at a superficial level. Some treatments with laser energy include the FemiLift and diVa. Any mild cases of SUI (Stress urinary incontinence) can also be treated with these two treatments. Both these treatments also increase the blood flow resulting in an increase in vaginal lubrication, the loss of which results in painful intercourse.
In case you experience a loss in tone and volume of the labia majora, a small amount of fat can be injected to recreate the lost fullness. On the other hand, if you are suffering from excessive skin then laser and radiofrequency can help with skin tightening. However, in case there is too much skin, you will have to consider surgery.
The ‘O Shot’ or the ‘G Shot’ are both injectables that can enhance the orgasms in some women. The O shot is a PRP injection given in the clitoris and vagina and is repeated annually; while the G shot is a collagen filler given in the erotic zone and is repeated every 3 to 5 months.
Surgical options for vaginal rejuvenation
Vaginoplasty is a surgical option that tightens up the vagina and possibly also improves sensitivity. It is a reconstructive surgical procedure that helps with concerns like vaginal laxity and SUI.
Labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure that helps women who are unhappy with their enlarged major or minor labia. This is most common congenital and could start at puberty due to hormones. This poses several physical problems like discomfort when wearing tight clothes, pain during exercising, painful intercourse, hygiene issues, and even frequent urinary tract infections. Due to these problems, women may lose interest in intercourse and this affects their sexual well being and self-image.
During the labiaplasty procedure, the wedge resection technique is the best to remove the excessive tissue. Unlike the traditional technique, this helps to retain the shape and color of the labia and any distortion of the vaginal opening or clitoris. It is performed under local anesthesia and dis-solvable sutures are used. When the skin on the outer lips has become loose, either fat grafting or excision is used to make them plump and youthful again.
Aging or weight gain could also lead to a fuller pubic mound which leads to an extra roll in your clothes. If your skin is still elastic, liposuction can be helpful. When the skin has lost its elasticity, a pubic lift will help eliminate the sagging. At times, your surgeon may decide to combine it with abdominoplasty to give you a slimmer and toned appearance.
You will heal from labiaplasty within 6 weeks and you must avoid tight clothes, any sexual activity, and tampons for the first 4 weeks. Once you see your results from the vaginal rejuvenation procedure, you will be glad to have restored your self-image together with your sexual well being.
